Associate in Science

The CT State Community College Surgical Technology Program is licensed by the Connecticut Board of Regents.

Surgical Technologists are integral members of the surgical team who work closely with surgeons, registered nurses, and anesthesia personnel. Surgical technologists are also responsible for assembling and organizing all the specialized instruments, equipment and tools needed for a wide variety of surgical procedures. They are experts in sterile technique, responsible for maintaining the sterile field during surgery.

Certification/Licensure Disclosure Statement:

Federal Regulation, 34 CFR 668.43-Institutional Information for Disclosure for Licensure Program requires the institution to disclose whether completion of a covered licensure program would be sufficient to meet licensure requirements in a State for that occupation. An institution can make the one or more of the following determinations:

The Surgical Technology Program at CT State Community college is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) 9355-113^th St. N #7709, Seminole, FL 3373 and meets the state education requirements for “a recognized course of study in Surgical Technology” in the state of Connecticut. In addition, a graduate of the CT State Surgical Technology Program in the state of Connecticut is eligible to take the national certification exam.

The Surgical Technology Program at CT State Community College has not determined if the associate degree program in Surgical Technology meets the state education requirements in any other state, any U.S. Territory, or the District of Columbia. Program applicants should investigate each state certification/licensure requirements prior to accepting an offer of admission to the Surgical Technology Program at CT State Community College.

The licensure boards in each state are responsible for establishing the requirements for licensure/certification for their state. Students who intend to seek certification/licensure in any state other than Connecticut need to consult with the state professional licensing board. The state professional licensing boards make the decision on whether an individual is eligible for certification/licensure based on the rules and regulations in place at the time the individual submits their application for certification/licensure.

The U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that employment of Surgical Technologists is nationally projected to grow 15% from 2014 to 2024, much faster than average.

PROGRAM TOTAL: $10,413.00 (tuition and clinical program fee) *Cost does not include student activity fees, textbooks, uniforms or other materials. Financial Aid may be available to those who qualify. Cost is subjected to change.

Goal Statement:

The Surgical Technology program prepares students to be competent entry-level surgical technologists in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains.

Program Goals:

The graduate will:

• Apply principles of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and microbiology to perioperative patient care.
• Distinguish the elements, action, and use of medications and anesthetic agents used during the perioperative experience.
• Demonstrate safe practice in the role of Surgical Technologist.
• Display competence in technical skills and aseptic technique in the perioperative environment.
• Practice responsible and accountable behavior within the role and competencies of the Surgical Technologist.
• Organize the intraoperative environment efficiently as a member of the surgical team.
• Apply learned knowledge and skills in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains to become nationally certified as a Surgical Technologist.

A minimum of C+ is required for all science and Surgical Technology courses and a C in all other general education courses for the Surgical Technology degree.
