First-Year Studies Department

We provide:
- English and math courses (MAT 079, MAT 085, MAT 095, ENG 066, ENG 091) that prepare students for college-level work.
- First-year experience courses giving students essential skills necessary for success while creating individual academic and career plans.
- Academic advising, coaching, and support for students in FYS courses as well as all General Studies students.
- Free daily math and English drop-in tutoring through the Center for Educational Services (CES). See the information and links below.
- Intensive 3-week boot camps to boost students’ basic skills in reading, writing, and math. https://gatewayct.edu/ce/free-boot-camps-for-math-and-english?highlight=WyJrb3MiXQ==
- Alternative Challenge Exams/Essays for students who wish to challenge their ACCUPLACER scores and/or placement recommendations.
We also:
- Work closely with New Haven High Schools, New Haven Adult Ed, and other local districts, to prepare students for the transition to GCC.
- Support the “Free Minds” book club and writing workshop.
- Encourage students to express their identity and share their personal stories through writing and projects, such as the Humans of Gateway Project: Humans_of_Gateway.pdf (gatewayct.edu)
- Work closely with the Center for Educational Services to ensure tutors are trained to meet the needs of developmental math and English students.
