Are you interested in a career in fire safety? Gateway Community College has the solution. Gateway offers a program in Firefighting 1 & 2 Certification.

This program provides:
  • EMT and CT Firefighter 1 & 2 training and preparation for certifications
  • Guidance for the standard municipal fire department civil service application exam
  • Assistance with locating volunteer opportunities
  • The program takes place in certified training facilities
  • Courses are taught by currently employed, certified staff.
Note: There are prerequisites for program enrollment. Mandatory information session for program enrollment. Math 085 and English 066 must be completed with a C or better, or test above this level prior to beginning the program. Each student must provide his or her own uniform and must rent or own Turnout and SCBA equipment.
 
Firefighters control and extinguish fires or respond to emergency situations where life, property, or the environment is at risk. Duties may include fire prevention, emergency medical service, free trapped individuals, hazardous material response, and search and rescue.
 
EMTs assess injuries, administer emergency medical care, and provide disaster assistance. They also transport injured or sick persons to medical facilities.
 
The employment growth projections for Firefighter positions are:
  • Projected job openings, 104,000 in the United States
  • Job outlook (2012-2022): 3 – 7%
The employment growth projections for Emergency Services positions are:
  • Projected job openings, 190,000 in the United States
  • Job outlook (2012-2022): 3 – 31% or higher
