What are Care Reports?

The Care Report can be used by students, faculty and staff to "report" students who are exhibiting issues or behavior that are causing concern. This includes:

  • Emotional/mental health concerns
  • Aberrant or altered behavior
  • Personal needs, e.g., food/clothing/transportation/housing
  • College student success needs, e.g., Achievement Coaching
  • Reports of sexual assault, stalking, or intimate partner violence

There are often signs that a student is in distress. For instance, is someone you know...

  • Experiencing a decline in academic performance?
  • Demonstrating disruptive or disturbing behavior?
  • Showing dramatic changes in appearance, personal hygiene, behavior, or weight?
  • Having problems at home, with classes or work?
  • Making disturbing comments in conversation, email, letters, social media postings, or papers?
  • Sad, anxious, or experiencing dramatic mood shifts?
  • Abusing alcohol or drugs?
  • Isolating themselves socially?
  • Acting paranoid or suspicious?
  • Frequently angry or easily frustrated?
  • Struggling with health problems?
  • If you know someone who is exhibiting any of the behaviors listed above, you can make a difference by filing a Care Report.

    New Student Advising

    New Students seeking Advising will first have to complete the mandatory online orientation before scheduling their Academic Planning planning session for the next semester. The Orientation is broken down into three sections and takes no more than 2 hours to complete. You will not be able to save your work in the middle of a section and will therefore need to fully complete at least one section at a time. Consequently, it is very important that you arrange for enough time on your calendar to get through the orientation in its entirety. Once the online Orientation is complete, an Advising Staff Member will reach out to you to schedule an Advising Session based upon your completion of the ACCUPLACER placement test and/or SAT scores.

    Mandatory Online Orientation

    New Student Orientation and Advising Outcomes:

    • Learn how to navigate the college website
    • Learn about degree and certificate programs offered
    • Identify career options
    • Build schedules from course offerings based upon placement test, AP, or SAT scores
    • Learn how to register for classes online
    • Learn about Degree Works to check academic progress and program requirements
    • Learn important terminology such as prerequisite, co-requisite, parallel, Satisfactory Academic Progress, and cumulative GPA
    • Identify faculty advisors and understand the importance of creating a working relationship with them
    • Identify campus resources and departments such as advising, career services, Center for Academic Progress (CAP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), TEAS testing, counseling, Family Economic Security Program (FESP), financial aid, HCC Foundation, and tutorial services.

    From the Gateway Community College website:

    Log into myCommNet using your student Banner ID and Password

    Choose the Student Tab

    Click on Student Self Service

    Select Student Records

    Select Student Degree Evaluation

    Select the present term

    Select What if Analysis

    Select Entry Term (term you first enrolled)

    Select the Program of Study (Major you want evaluated)

    Select First Major (the same program)

    Select Generate Request

    Select General Requirements (not Detail)

    Generate request then Submit and Print

    To select another Program of Study/Major – Click on What If Analysis at the bottom of the page. Areas designated as MET are completed. Areas NOT MET need to be completed.

    1. Go to the HCC websit.

    2. Click on Registration Resources

    3. Look for the heading REGISTRATION

    4. Click Here to Register Online You will need to have your banner id number and your password to proceed from here.

    5. Log onto MyCommNet using your banner id and enter your password

    6. Click the “Student” tab

    7. Click Student /Academic Records

    8. Click Registration & Payment

    9. Click on select a term and choose FALL 2017

    10. Click on Register (add/drop) classes

    11. You will need the four digit CRN number for each course you want to register for

    12. Enter the four digit CRN number into each box correctly then select submit to register Payment is due at time of registration. You can use your credit or financial aid to complete your registration Any mistakes or changes to your registration cannot be done online they must be done in person.

    Click on Student Self Service

    Click on Student Records

    Click on Student Information

    Select Current Term

    Your Primary Advisor is shown here. Return to home page of website.

    Click onto Directories to locate Primary Advisor’s contact information.

    Set up an appointment for advisement. Advising months are: April for the Summer/Fall registration periods and November for the Spring. Please seek advisement from your faculty advisor during these advising months.

    Read Your Catalog

    You must be a good consumer of your college education. Ignorance of the rules is no excuse.

    Follow Your Degree Plan

    Without a plan you have no direction and with no direction you cannot reach your goal.

    Rule #3

    Meet With Your Advisor Every Semester

    Careful planning is key to academic success. You do not have to go it alone. Ask your advisor. Don’t know who your advisor is or having trouble finding your advisor? Come to LH- A111. We will help you.

    Rule #4

    You Must Meet All Prerequisite Requirements

    A prerequisite is a required course that you must complete. 
    For example: ENG* E101 (Composition) is a “prerequisite” to ENG* E102 (Literature and Composition). You cannot take ENG* 102 until you complete ENG* 101.

    Rule #5

    You Cannot Be In Two Places At The Same Time

    Be aware of the days and times each class begins and ends. Even a cross over of 10 minutes is physically impossible. Watch your times.

    Rule #6

    Not All Courses Are Offered Every Semester

    Work with your Faculty Advisor on long range planning to determine when you will complete courses required in your program.

    Rule #7

    Get The CRN # Right

    The CRN # is the course’s identity. It is a four digit number at the beginning of each course listed in the schedule. Get it wrong and you are in the wrong class. Period.
