New, Transfer, and Readmitted Student Advising & Registration
The Student Success Center at Gateway Community College provides advisement to new and continuing CT State students. Academic Advisors collaborate with Faculty Advisors and Program Coordinators to ensure students understand their academic path and can successfully enroll and complete their courses. Students must first apply to CT State before attending a New Student Advising and Registration session.
New Student Advising and Registration Sessions (NSAR)
New student advising and registration sessions are designed to assist new students in understanding the academic world, and to register for their first semester of courses at the college. During an NSAR Session, students will receive:
- First semester advising
- Assistance registering for courses
- A student success workshop
- Learn the electronic self-service tools
NSAR sessions last about 2 hours. Students are encouraged to bring copies of their high school transcript, GED scores, SAT scores, and AP scores (if applicable). This will assist us in determining your placement into college level courses. Please note that prior to booking an NSAR session, students must first set-up their myCTState login. For instructions on setting up your myCTState login, refer to your acceptance email or click here. To book a New Student Advising and Registration session, click here.
To prepare for your NSAR session please complete the following:
- Review your Acceptance email to CT State, which contains your Student ID#
- Compile any relevant documents to assist with your advising session, even if you already provided them to the office of Admissions, including SAT scores, AP scores, GED scores and your high school transcript.
- Apply for Financial Aid (or establish an alternate payment method)
- Complete the FOCUS 2
- Create a new account here
- Use the following ACCESS CODE when prompted: LIONS
- Complete the Work Interest Assessment. This should take approximately 5 minutes to complete and provides valuable information as to how your interests relate to possible majors/program, careers, and expected salary.
Transfer and Readmitted Student Advising and Registration:
Students transferring into GCC from a campus outside of the CT State Community College system must complete a CT State Transfer Application and submit all official copies of their college transcripts to the office of admissions. Students must complete the Admissions process and be accepted into the college before scheduling an advising appointment. Please note Please note that prior to booking an NSAR session, students must first set-up their myCTState login. For instructions on setting up your myCTState login, refer to your acceptance email or click here.
Students that have not been enrolled at GCC for a period of 4 semesters or longer and have been readmitted to the college are encouraged to connect with the Student Success Center to meet with an advisor about their desired academic plans and next steps for registration. Continuing Student Advising and Registration:
Continuing students are encouraged to connect with their Guided Pathways Advisor to prepare for registration, and their Faculty Advisor or Program Coordinator to learn more about their degree path.
Current students should refer to their student email to schedule an appointment with their Guided Pathways Advisor or contact our office for next steps. Students can locate their GP Advisor by contacting the Student Success Center, or by visiting Degree Works and your assigned advisor(s) will be listed at the top of the page.
