
Gateway Community College (GCC) offers a variety of English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to meet students’ academic, professional, and personal goals. Classes are scheduled mornings, afternoons, and evenings to meet students’ diverse needs. Some ESL classes can be used for foreign language credit.

COM 173 - Public Speaking
Prepares students, whose native language is not English, to acquire reading, writing, listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills at a level that will permit them to continue their college studies or function with effective language skills in the national and global job market.
Earn an ESL Certificate of Achievement by completing the following courses (15 credits):
ESL 180-Reading V (3 credits)
ESL 178-Advanced Reading and Writing (3 credits)
ESL 161-Integrated Skills VI (3 credits)
ESL 139-Pronunciation III -or- ESL 144 Pronunciation IV (3 credits)
One Elective from any discipline offered at the college (3 credits)
Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven
Gateway Community College is fortunate to have the onsite support of the Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven who provide English Language Learners with additional support. Every month, the Literacy Volunteers schedules free classes at many levels.
Due to Covid-19, our offices are closed until further notice.
In the meantime, we are offering free ZOOM classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and Citizenship Prep.
