Student Success Center

 

The Student Success Center provides comprehensive services in an environment conducive to learning by providing the support students need to reach their full potential. The Success Center includes the following departments and services; Academic Advising, Career Services, College Transition, Counseling, International Student Services and Veterans Affairs.  

Students should engage in the following activities to help ensure they reach their academic and career goals while attending Gateway Community College.

Academic and career planning

  • Identify and select degree and/or certificate programs at Gateway
  • Sign up with MyGateway Academic Planning & Advising (online advising portal)
  • Research potential universities and specific programs for transfer (if applicable) 
  • Participate in academic advising to ensure proper course selection
  • Students who are contemplating several options should connect with career services to participate in career exploration activities such as:

Success at Gateway

  • Meet with an advisor, counselor or coach to review progress toward goals including individual performance, grades and strategies for success
    • Evaluate congruence between career/academic goals and actual performance
    • Review degree evaluation to fully understand requirements for graduation
    • Revise or refine goals if necessary

Graduation and Beyond

Graduation

  • Six months prior to graduation meet with an academic advisor to review degree evaluation and ensure all requirements have been met
  • Register for any remaining courses to fulfill outstanding degree requirements
  • Complete course substitutions forms (If applicable)
  • Ensure all transfer credits have been successfully applied to GCC transcript (If applicable)
  • Submit your graduation application online through the Office of the Registrar
  • Engage in transition planning for employment and/or transfer to 4yr college or university

Transfer

  • Research and identify potential colleges/universities and programs of study
  • Attend transfer fairs and meet with admissions and/or transfer counselors from each college/university
  • Track deadlines for transfer admissions, housing and financial aid for each potential school
  • Submit online applications to selected colleges and universities (fee waivers may be available through the CONNTAC office located in N-213K)
  • File a FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov and contact the Financial Aid office at each college/university
  • Send GCC transcripts and High School transcripts to each college/university (requests for official transcripts must be made through myCommNet.edu) 

Employment

  • Develop a comprehensive job search strategy that includes:
    • Develop job search materials ie. resume, cover letter and letters of reference
    • Build skills needed to compete for employment such as interview networking techniques
  • Students are encouraged to engage in the following career services activities:
    • Sign up with MyGateway Career Success (online career service portal)
    • Attend GCC career and job fairs
    • Attend career services workshops and presentations
    • Schedule one on one appointments with professional staff
