The Great Center
Gateway Community College’s Workforce Development & Continuing Education Division is actively supporting the businesses, organizations and job seekers in greater New Haven by delivering fast-paced, high-impact training in the following major areas:
Patient Navigator – In conjunction with Connecticut Cancer Partnerships, the state Department of Public Health and a host of local healthcare and social service agencies, Gateway created a pilot program to train entry-level patient navigators. These individuals assist clients with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, to work through the complexities of the healthcare system. Patient navigators are prominently mentioned in recent healthcare reform legislation as a means to reduce costs and improve care.
Patient Care Associate – Gateway partnered with health care facilities including Yale-New Haven Hospital to develop a program to deliver work-ready patient care associates, or PCA’s, to the hospital. Over the course of a single semester, prospective PCA’s will receive training as certified nursing assistants (CNA’s), with credentials in phlebotomy and electro-cardiogram (EKG).
Gateway worked with the United Illuminating Company to customize courses for UI’s approved contractors to enhance customer service and provide uniform standards for commercial energy auditing. Training benefits included better customer outcomes; across-the-board practices for auditing properties; an industry credential; and enhanced employment opportunities among the contractors.
In response to a stated need from regional transit providers, Gateway introduced an intensive five-month program that prepares for entry-level opportunities as electro-mechanical and communications technicians. As a fast-track to the workforce, graduates from this program tackle knowledge and practical assessments for entry-level employment with an edge over the competition. As we speak, graduates are being hired into these secure, highly sought-after positions.
At the request of the City of New Haven, Gateway developed a short, effective program to prepare city residents to compete for entry-level positions with the New Haven Fire Department. This test orientation is a window onto what to expect during the actual application and exam process to join the NHFD.
In partnership with the South Central Regional Water Authority, Gateway rapidly developed a training program to enable current water company employees to become licensed Plant Operators with the CT Department of Public Health. Licensure greatly increases opportunities for promotion and upward mobility for operators and ensures the integrity of the Water Authority.
