The GREAT Center is offering a new, no cost training program, Community Health Worker, through the Accelerating Connections to Employment (ACE) Grant. A Community Health Worker, or CHW, is a front-line worker who serves as a liaison between health and social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve quality and cultural competency of service delivery. CHWs complement clinically-trained health care teams comprised of physicians, physician assistants, and nurses, among others. CHWs carry out a broad range of responsibilities that facilitate access to health care services and that support patients achieve goals in their care plans. Examples include:
Positively connecting to the community
Helping others find access to healthcare and social services
Managing cases and coordinating care
Delivering home-based support services
Coaching and promoting good health
CHWs are known by many different names, for example, Community Care Coordinator, Community Health Educator, Community Worker, Outreach Specialist, Outreach Worker, Patient Navigator, Community Health Representative and Promotor de salud. Skills required for employment are communication skills, interpersonal skills, confidentiality skills, knowledge of the community, organizational skills and knowledge base of health.
Employers who hire Community Health Care Workers are non-profit organizations, local health departments and government agencies, community-based organizations, home care agencies and hospitals. Full time workers with some education can expect to make between $30,000 and $45,000 per year. The higher the education level, the higher the wage. Medical background increases wages as well.
About the program
Through the Accelerating Connections to Employment (ACE) Grant, Gateway Community College students have the opportunity to attend career preparation programs at Gateway and move quickly into employment. ACE is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor and Annie E. Casey Foundation.
Acceptance into this program is not guaranteed. Participants will be selected by lottery. Bi-lingual speakers are encouraged to apply.
