Interlibrary loan is a service that enables patrons to borrow materials or request photocopies of periodical articles that are not owned by Gateway Community College Library.
Currently enrolled Gateway Community College students, faculty, staff and alumni are eligible to request interlibrary loans. Part time faculty and staff are limited to 10 borrowed items or periodical requests per year. Alumni are limited to 6 interlibrary loan requests per academic year. The library staff reserves the right to limit the number of items borrowed or articles requested.
How to Conduct an Interlibrary Loan
To conduct an interlibrary loan, patrons must fill out request forms available at service desks on either campus or via email and possess a valid Gateway Community College library card. In an effort to avoid delays, forms must be filled out at completely as possible. Two attempts will be made to locate requested materials. If both attempts are unsuccessful, the request will be cancelled and the requester notified.
There is no fee for this service; however, in instances where items cannot be borrowed for free, charges may be passed onto the borrower. Borrowers will be informed of prospective charges before requests are sent.
Materials available for request include books, periodical articles, newspaper articles and audiobooks. Materials not available for borrowing include Reference books, textbooks, new books, audio visual materials and issues of periodicals. Please plan ahead when requesting materials as it could take up to two weeks or more to search, process and receive interlibrary loan items.
Interlibrary loan items can be picked up and returned at the circulation desk during normal library hours. Failure to pick up materials may result in the suspension of interlibrary loan services.
The loan period and renewal options are determined by the lending library. Renewal requests must be made prior to the specified due date. Lost or damaged materials are the responsibility of the user.
